Skin Care Tips for Oily Skin to Prevent Acne

Maintaining a proper skin care routine is important to keeping your skin clear, free of impurities and oil, and moisturized so it remains healthy, acne-free, and radiant. Your basic skin care regimen should include cleansing of the skin, applying an alcohol-free toner, and finish with a moisturizer + sunscreen.

Face cleansing is the core of skin care regimen. You should wash your skin with a gentle cleanser at least twice a day to remove the oil, dead skin cells, dry skin. These are substances that can clog the pores. It is important for the pores of your skin to remain bacteria free as the presence of bacteria is something which contributes substantially to the growth of pimples. If you have overall cleanliness of the skin, you can lessen the chance of pimples. Before you apply all those cosmetics or medications for your acne, experts always tell you to wash your face. Here are several tips on proper skin care for your oily acne skin and how to properly wash your face.

1. First, remove every trace of make-up/cosmetic on your face. Use cotton ball and moisturizing cream to avoid damaging your skin.

2.Use lukewarm water to wash your face. This will also open the pores for deeper cleansing. Avoid washing your face with water that is too hot or too cold as it can dry out your skin. .

3.Avoid strong or harsh soaps/ cleansers. Strong soaps can dry your skin and strip off natural lipids. Choose soap that are mild if you prefer soap, or you can always choose cleansers that are soap-free, non- comedogenic (won’t clog pores), and mild like Cetaphil, Burt Bee’s or Neutrogena. Even better, you should use natural skin care products such as Dermalise since they are more gentle to your skin.

4.For people who have acne-prone skin, you should use cleansing products that contain salicylic acid. Salicylic Acid is a naturally occurring organic acid and a gentle, effective exfoliator. It is very effective for acne and oily skin and helps to unclog pores by removing dead skin cells, loosen and remove blackheads and whiteheads, and prevent future outbreaks. Products should contain 1-2% concentration of salicylic acid in order for it to be effective. For sensitive skin types, a 1% concentration would be suitable and for stubborn acne, 2% concentration is recommended.

Note that Salicylic Acid also makes skin sensitive to the sun. Sunscreen should therefore be used while applying Salicylic Acid. Also, sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays of the sun and helps prevent wrinkles.

5.Massage face gently in an upward motion using using your fingers. Do not do hard rubbing as it will actually do more harm than good.

6.Rinse face well to remove all residue of soap or cleanser. Residues left behind can actually clog your pores. Facial cleansers can leave an invisible residue behind which can clog your pores. Rinse three times, then rinse again.

7.Pat dry with soft, non-abrasive towel. Never ever rub your face.

8.Use an alcohol-free toner on your face. Toning your skin restores skin pH back to it’s normal range and it closes the pores to your skin and prevent dust and other air borne particles from settling in your pores. Again, it is recommended to use products with natural and organic ingredients. It should make your face feel smooth and refreshed. Astringents and toners with glycolic or alpha hydroxy acids work the best for toning the face. These acids actually can reduce the pore size, and help avoid ingrown hairs. They are aggressive and have quick results. Remember to look for a product that is not photosensitive (sensitive to light).

9.Finish your routine by using a moisturizer to replenish the natural oils that have been lost. Moisturizing is a necessity step. Again, the product that uses natural ingredients (i.e. Dermalise) and with the least amount of chemical additives is the best. Always use a light moisturizer on your face after cleansing. For an intensive moisture treatment use pure vitamin E, or aloe vera oil. It is available in liquid form, or just break open a capsule and apply the oil directly to the skin.

10.Use a sunscreen throughout the day (min SPF15) to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Long term exposure to UV radiation may result in harmful effects such as sunburn, skin cancer, and acceleration of skin aging process.

11.If you have oily hair, you should wash and shampoo your hair daily to prevent the oil from touching and clogging the pores on your forehead.

12.Also, it is also important to not to touch your skin with your fingers. Our hands and fingers normally carry a multitude of various germs. When these germs make contact with the pimples, it can make the pimples worse.

The above 12 essential skin care for your oily acne skin steps would help you keep your face clean, clear and beautiful. However, for some of us unfortunate acne victims, our acne problems are more serious. Therefore, tougher measures must be taken. In addition to following the above recommendations, it is recommended to use an acne curing system that fights acne bacteria both from inside the body as well as outside the body. Most over the counter acne products in the market such as Clearsil, Oxy-10, ProActiv only address acne problems at the skin level and that is not enough to effectively fight acne.

If your acne problem still persists after following the above skin care regimen, you should use an anti-acne system that employs the proven principle of fighting acne both from the outside and the inside the body. The system should include an oil-free, SD Alcohol and Salicylic Acid solutions based facial & body wash and herbal pills. The facial/body wash will help you fight acne on your face, back, chest and arms by unclogging your pores and expelling all the bacteria and oil that cause pimples and other blemishes. The herbal pills effectively fight acne-causing bacteria from the inside. Together, they are very potent in getting rid of acne fast and preventing acne from occurring again. See our website for more information and for recommendation of a proven anti-acne system guaranteed to stop acne fast!

Arnica: Arnica is not just another herb, it has been a popular choice for centuries. Actually Arnica is a genus that consists of around 30 perennial herbaceous species of plants that belong to the sunflower family also known as Asteraceae. Arnica herbs are normally found around the temperate regions of North America as well as Eurasia. Medically, it is known as Arnica Montana and its root has the maximum medicinal value. This is because Arnica root consists of thymol, which has anti-inflammatory effect. Thymol in Arnica is believed to be an effective vasodilator of subcutaneous blood capillaries and also acts as a diclofenac, which accelerates healing of wounds. Arnica extract is used in Zulvera herbal hair shampoo because it is a proven scalp tonic that effectively revitalizes the scalp and removes dandruff as well.

Yarrow: The medical term for Yarrow is Achillea millefolium and it belongs to the same plant family as Arnica, which is the Asteraceae family. Yarrow has distinctive lacy leaves and flat flowerhead.  It has been in use in China since the second millennium BC. Yarrow is grown in several regions across the world from grassland and meadows to wide pastures. The entire plant is used for its medicinal properties. It has a high concentration of azulen, which renders it a powerful and highly effective anti-inflammatory herb. It also has higher azulen content as compared to Chamomile. Azulen has strong anti-infectious properties, which is why it is most commonly used for treating different types of skin and scalp infections. This is exactly the reason why it is used in Zulvera herbal hair shampoo.

Tea Tree: Tea Tree is probably one of the most popular herbs across the world. Tea Tree extracts or Tea Tree oil is being in use as a potent antiseptic in Australia since decades. It has anti-fungal properties that work towards removing dermatophytes effectively from your skin and thus keeps it clean. But in Zulvera herbal hair shampoo, it acts as a scalp purifier. More often than not, it is used with Yarrow oil for deep cleansing of the scalp and to enrich the hair follicles. Tea Tree is one of the most effective herbs for hair care and scalp treatment.

Yarrow: Yarrow is known as Achillea millefolium and it belongs to the plant family of Asteraceae. Some of the common names of Yarrow include Thousand-leaf, Common Yarrow, Nosebleed plant, Gordaldo, Old Man’s Pepper, Milfoil, Sanguinary, and Soldier’s Woundwort. Yarrow has a high azulen content, which makes it a powerful anti-inflammatory herb but that’s not all – it has a higher content than in Chamomile. Azulen provides Yarrow with anti-infectious properties, which are used for treating different types of skin and scalp infections. The astringent as well as regulating properties of Yarrow makes it a herb that can be used for balancing oily skin, and for preventing hair loss and maintaining scalp conditions. Look Your Best with the Right Shampoo and Conditioner

It is sometimes impossible to get just the right texture and feel to your hair.  Sometimes it’s soft and silky but then it’s too oily or gets rough.  You aren’t the only one to struggle to find just the right combination of shampoo and conditioner that will make your hair flow and move like the women on television.  Daily conditioner, deep conditioner, anti-frizz, detangler, shampoo, nutrition, vitamins, mousse, and heat protectors – it just is all too confusing.

Anyone who wants that silky shine has to start with the basics – daily conditioner and shampoo – and must have good knowledge of a few basics of hair care as well.  Once you know how the hair grows and develops it is easier to better evaluate your own situation and control your frizz, tame your curl or just make your hair shine in the light.

Hair is important to both men and women.  It is part of that first impression that is so important.  It creates gender identity and is the only part of the body that is completely renewable without scarring.

When you are born you have all the hair follicles you will ever have in your life.  Follicles aren’t added during life.  As you grow and mature they do appear less dense because the skin size increases and the follicles are spread further apart.

Hair is made up of two different structures – one is living under the skin in the follicle and the shaft, which we care for with shampoo and conditioner, is actually dead cells.  The hair cells inside the follicle actually divide (double) every 23 to 72 hours, which is faster than any other cell in the human body.  This is one of the reasons that chemotherapy often leaves an individual bald – the chemical drug attacks cells that are dividing the quickest in the body.

At the base of each hair shaft is a gland that produces sebum – a natural conditioner.  There is more of this sebum produced after puberty which explains why younger children do not often have greasy hair.  As we grow older the production of sebum declines, which partially accounts for the increasing dryness and fly aways in men and women who have grey hair.

There are three layers to each hair shaft.  The largest layer is the cortex at the center of the hair and the outermost layer is the cuticle.  Most shampoo and conditioners affect the cuticle of the hair.  And, each time we do something ‘special’ to our hair – such as perming or coloring  – we also affect the pH of the hair, which in turn affects the way in which the cuticle lies on the hair shaft.

Mystery solved!  Now you know why hair can sometimes appear oily, dry, fly away or damaged.  When we treat it with chemicals, soaps and conditioners we must also take into account the type of hair, the pH, the treatments and the current damage if we want to effect a positive change.

So which shampoo and conditioner is the best one to use for your hair type and circumstances?   Before choosing a product you want to fully evaluate the type of hair that you have so you meet the needs of your hair.  You can have curly, coarse, straight, limp, dry, processed/colored or oily hair.  And it can also be a combination of these – straight, limp and oily or thick, curly and coarse.

There are some basic differences between hair that you should know before choosing your shampoo and conditioner.  For instance, curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair because the natural conditioner produced at the scalp don’t make it down the shaft as easily as it does on a straight shaft.  For this reason people who have curly hair should use shampoos that are moisturizing, hydrating and creamy.  Shampoos that contain wheat germ oil, nut oils or shea butter work well for hair that needs more tender loving care.

Hair that is curly or coarse should have conditioning done daily to keep it as healthy as possible.  Conditioner should be the same as shampoos, moisturizing and hydrating.  People who have curly hair are also benefit from an extra hot oil treatment once a month or may enjoy making their own deep conditioner at home.  One homemade recipe uses a mixture of olive oil, mayonnaise and one egg.  Heat the oil and mayonnaise slightly before whipping in the egg.  Put it over the hair and cover the head with a disposable shower cap to keep in the heat.  Keep it in place for 30 minutes and then wash it out.

People who have fine, oily or limp hair may find it challenging to get just the right shampoo and conditioner.  Fine here is more susceptible to looking oily hours after a shampoo if the wrong conditioner were shampoos used. Natural conditioners produced by the follicles slide down the shaft very quickly which decreases the time it takes before the hair starts to look oily.

People who have straight hair should stay away from those which are creamy and head for shampoos that are gentle but marked for daily or frequent washing.  With recent research and technological advances it appears that the ingredient panthenol is best for hair that is thin or fine.  Experts believe that the panthenol penetrates the cuticle and makes the shaft swell and appear thicker.

Not all hair that is fine needs conditioners, especially daily.  If you can comb through the hair is after your shower then you may want to condition only two or three times each week.  If your hair is long enough tried to condition only the ends but keep the conditioner away from scalp.  Some people find that a spray conditioner is lighter in weight and doesn’t create as much oil for fine hair.

Another challenge for women is hair that’s been treated – permed, colored or relaxed.  When hair has been over-processed the hair will suffer from oily roots and dry shaft and ends.  These mix makes it difficult to find the just the right shampoo and conditioner.  You have to clean the roots and moisturize the ends. You can try using a shampoo designed specifically for normal hair at switching to a stronger conditioner, using it from the middle of the hair down.

People who have colored their hair will want to preserve the color for as long as possible.  At the moment there are a plethora of shampoos and conditions that are “specially formulated” for hair that is then colored.  Unfortunately, experts say that these are just another way to make money.  You want to look for a shampoo that is gentle on the hair, such as baby shampoo.

Conditioners that work well for processed hair should be used primarily on the ends.  Avoid conditioners that contain silicone because that chemical will strip the hair of color and change the way in which a perm wears.  To preserve color even longer try shampooing only every other day and usage right shampoo when needed.

People who have dried damaged hair may actually have the easiest time choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for them.  Avoid clear a shampoos and goes straight to the creamy, moisturizing and alter a hydrating ones.  These help to smooth and de-tangle static.  Remember to add moisture whenever possible.  This means using a strong conditioner that is older hydrating or ultra-moisturizing.  Remember, you cannot over moisturize dried damaged hair.

Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner is the best basic care you can give to your hair.  This is the underlying structure upon which a good defrizzing, detangling or mousse can sufficiently add structure, balance, bounce and shine to your locks.

At Salon Mason Ohio we help our clients look their best!

Organic Shampoo – What You Need To Know Before You Buy

Organic shampoo is the safest and healthiest shampoo on the market, right? Well, it depends… Is it the real thing, or is it an organic wannabe? There are a good number of pseudo-organic shampoos on the market from companies that want a piece of the organic pie, but are not willing to go the distance to produce a truly organic product. These organic imitators pretend to be organic, but when put to the test, they just don’t measure up.

How do you tell whether the organic shampoo you buy is truly organic?

The first thing you need to know is that “organic” on the package or on the front of the label does not mean the shampoo is organic. The term “organic” has no official definition within the cosmetics and personal care products industry. So, manufacturers can use it however they like. Numerous companies call their shampoo organic when in fact it really isn’t.

How do they get away with this?

Because they can. There are no regulations or laws to stop them.

As a result of the misuse of the term organic, a number of the truly health conscious companies producing “real” organic shampoo and other personal care products convinced the FDA to allow them to use the USDA certified organic label if their ingredients met the National Organic Program standards for food.

Not be left out of the organic ball game, a group of companies who wanted to legitimately call their products organic, but were not willing to use only real organic ingredients that met the food standards created their own organic standard with lower requirements, allowing some synthetic ingredients and chemical preservatives. This was the birth of the OASIS organic standard.

Eco-Cert, the European organic standard, known for its low standards and approving products as organic that should not be called organic is another organic certification now sometimes seen in the U.S.

So, how can you know for certain if the organic shampoo you buy is truly organic?

Your safest bet is to make sure it is USDA certified organic. You will find ingredients in other so-called certified organic shampoos that really should not be in certified organic products.

So before you buy any shampoo, organic or not, make sure you check the ingredients list on the back of the package. The truth about the health and safety of your shampoo or any personal care product you choose is in the ingredients list. It’s not on the front of the package. It’s not in any advertisements, celebrity endorsements, radio or TV commercials. It’s not even on the company website. It’s in the ingredients that are in the product.

Here are some examples of ingredients found in a number of so-called organic shampoos which really don’t belong in any organic product:

•    Grapefruit Seed Extract – This alleged natural preservative has been shown in various research studies to derive its antimicrobial properties, not from grapefruit seed, but from toxic chemicals, primarily benzethonium chloride, and to a lesser extent from triclosan and parabens.

•    Cocamidopropyl Betaine – It is toxic to the immune system, a skin sensitizer and can cause contact dermatitis and other allergic reactions. Proponents of its use say it’s natural because it’s derived from coconut. However, it is a highly processed synthetic chemical.

•    Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein – Anything that’s hydrolyzed is a hidden source of MSG. Not only is MSG harmful when you eat it, but also when you put it on your skin. It is an excitotoxin, i.e. it excites your brain cells to death. And it can be absorbed through your skin into your bloodstream.

•    PEG – Any ingredient that contains PEG in its name can be contaminated with the cancer-causing chemical 1,4-dioxane. This was proven in a 2008 study in which body care products were taken from store shelves, including health food stores, and tested. A large number of these products were shown to contain 1,4-dioxane in varying amounts.

Make sure the organic shampoos you choose do not contain any of these harmful chemicals. Also remember that the above ingredients are only a few of the ones you need to watch out for. There are thousands of ingredients used in shampoos and other personal care products. Many are harmful. Most have not been adequately tested.
